2. Principles of dendrochronology

2.1 Aggregation of several signals

Ring thickness (as well as maximum density and the isotopic signature of the wood) varies in response to various internal factors (biotic factors such as age, longevity, sensitivity, or genetic factors) and external factors (climate, soil, exposure, population dynamics, anthropic action). A tree-ring series can thus be considered as a linear aggregation of several unobserved sub-series, which can be expressed as follows :
