8.1 Pioneering studies
Paradoxically enough, the pioneering dendrochronological studies devoted to surface processes were based on the analysis of growth rings at root level and not at stem level. Indeed, root loosening leads to eccentric growth, reaction wood formation and often scarring. As early as the 1960s, these indicators were used to measure denudation rates in different bioclimatic contexts (see for a complete review).
