1. Instrument presentation
Setting up a gas chromatography/olfactometry (GC/O) system requires only minor modification of a gas chromatograph. At the exit of the chromatographic column, a splitting system splits the flow in two. Part of this flow is directed to the physical detector, while the other part is sent to an olfactory detection port.
Thus, two parts of the instrument differ from the chromatograph commonly encountered: the flow splitting system and the olfactory detection port (figure 1 ).
