GC/O makes it possible to establish a link between the chemical composition and odor of a sample. Moreover, some of the compounds contributing to overall odor are trace odorants. As a result, they are sometimes present in quantities below the detection limits of most physical systems, but can nevertheless be detected by the human nose thanks to their low perception thresholds and the sensitivity of human olfactory receptors to a large number of odorants.
