3. Hydrogen hazards and safety

During operations involving hydrogen, an ignition or explosion would occur if the following three conditions were simultaneously met  :

  • presence of hydrogen in its flammable range ;

  • presence of oxygen in excess of the oxygen concentration limit (5% oxygen at ambient pressure and temperature);

  • ignition source (spark, electrostatic discharge, hot spot, open flame, hot surfaces, etc.) exceeding the minimum ignition energy of hydrogen (16 to 17 μJ in air).
