3. Fast spectroscopy for fast steps

Infrared spectroscopy has proven its effectiveness in monitoring reactions on the surface of heterogeneous catalysts. Observation of the entire mid-infrared spectrum makes the technique particularly powerful: most molecules have characteristic bands in the infrared spectrum, and unexpected species can be detected without having to look specifically for them. The technique is fast, recording between 1 and 10 spectra per second. To record the transient appearance of very fleeting species such as certain reaction intermediates on the catalyst, however, we'll need to go even faster and use elaborate spectral recording techniques.
