INTRODUCTION
The aim of this dossier is to illustrate, through two application examples, the value of simulation and optimization techniques in plant scheduling and design, in a context where the development and marketing of a new product involves complex and costly research and development activities: in the pharmaceutical field, for example, there are strict constraints linked to the need to draw up marketing authorization dossiers, and a large number of products are abandoned during development, after having undergone clinical trials. Simulation and optimization tools for discontinuous processes are therefore an effective aid throughout the life cycle of process development, production and product marketing. The case studies selected concern a protein production plant, which serves as a common thread for scheduling and design studies, as well as a multi-product fine chemicals industrial plant for a remodeling application.
