1. Sulfonamides
The drugs referred to as sulfonamides share the common feature of having a sulfonamide -SO 2 NHR function in their structure. They belong to three major therapeutic classes: antibacterials, antidiabetics and diuretics (figure 1 ). It is primarily the nature of the R group that determines the activity profile of the compounds in this family.
