1.1 Different strategies
Liquid chromatography is a well-established technique for analyzing a large number of substances in a wide variety of fields.
For example, HPLC can be used to determine pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables, to precisely characterize a tea sample to determine its polyphenol content, to determine prohibited substances (diuretics, beta-blockers, stimulants, etc.) in sportsmen's urine, or to control the quality of drugs.
However, the analysis times obtained in HPLC with a conventional 150 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm column can sometimes be relatively long (on average, an analysis takes between 30 and 60 min) and in some cases, the separation power of such a column may prove too...
