Initially onerous, CDs were long regarded as laboratory curiosities. Two factors long prevented their industrial development: the high cost of production and incomplete toxicological studies. . Since the 1980s, their production on an industrial scale (which has considerably lowered prices), improved toxicological knowledge and advances in our understanding of the molecular encapsulation phenomenon, have made it possible to market numerous inclusion compounds.
