3.1 Rationalization of component selection
It is advisable to adopt a rational approach to the choice of constituents. The formulator should start by choosing the type of emulsion he wants to make: water-in-oil (W/O) or oil-in-water (O/W). He should then endeavor to justify the presence of each constituent by matching it with the expected functions as they might result from a functional analysis of the product (QFD matrix ).
It is useful to specify the emulsifying components (surfactants, polymers, solid particles).
