1. Why search for residual solvents?
The need to test pharmaceutical substances for residual solvents was clearly recognized in the late 1970s, when pharmacopoeias such as the US Pharmacopoeia (USP) introduced specific tests for residual solvents, accompanied by standards in some of their monographs.
However, it wasn't until the early 1980s that a rational approach was proposed for defining specifications. This strategy was developed by a working group of the Italian Pharmacopoeia
