5. Conclusion

The enormous progress made since the discovery of electroluminescence in organic materials has enabled the creation of an industry for small passive displays. To go beyond this, it is essential to improve lifetimes and reduce production costs, which is difficult because development and production take place at the same time.

A few big questions remain:

  • what is the best approach for producing the active matrix (amorphous silicon, polycrystalline silicon)?

  • should both polymer and evaporated molecule routes be maintained?

  • what is the best industrial technique for depositing materials?
