1. Overview of polymer surfaces

A polymer is any substance composed of macromolecules. The best known are natural fibers (wood, paper, cotton, leather, silk, wool, etc.), plastics, rubbers, glues, paints and resins.

They are widely used as matrices for composite materials, and are generally soft (Young's modulus < 3 GPa) and light (density < 1.5).
