2. Phenomenological aspects of mixed lubrication

The mixed lubrication regime (figure 6 ) refers to a mixture within the contact of the two local modes of lubricant action (continuous thin film, boundary film). In this section, we describe the consequences of this mixed behavior on friction, wear and fluid flow in the interface.

2.1 Description of friction

As the contact is divided between two local lubrication modes, the interface can be broken down into contiguous zones where continuous thin film prevails, and zones where the local thickness is small enough to induce a boundary film lubrication mode.
