7. Glossary

Jerky sliding; stick-slip

Vibration induced by friction in the tangential direction, characterized by a succession of sticking and sliding phases and induced by a difference between static and dynamic friction.

Arc-boutement; sprag-slip

Frictional instability in the tangential direction caused by mechanical coupling between the normal and tangential directions.

Mode coupling; coupling mode

Friction-induced vibration characterized by a vibratory mode in two directions with geometric and frictional coupling.

Vibrations induites par le frottement; friction induced vibration

These are vibrations generated by the relative movement of the two elements in contact.
