Necessary precautions for solving temporary protection problems
We have already seen that there is a wide variety of temporary protection films available. So far, however, we have only looked at products specifically designed for this purpose. Many other products contribute to protection, either by reinforcing it to the point of making the use of a special product unnecessary, or, on the contrary, by hindering it.
Lubricating oils and greases leave a protective film on the components they lubricate; for a relatively short downtime, this film will be sufficient. For example, an engine oil will protect the engine internally, but for longer standstills (e.g. winter storage of agricultural machinery), it is advisable to use a protective oil compatible with the operating oil.
Rolling oils, machining,...

1.Standardization of industrial lubricants
The efforts of ISO member countries led to the creation of standard NF ISO 3448 (T 60-141), which classifies industrial lubricants according to their viscosity at a reference temperature of 40°C.
ISO 6743-99 and NF T 60 -162 classify lubricants into families, according to application. Lubricants have been classified into 18 families, listed by letter.

2.ISO 6743 -X classifications
The ISO 6743-99 family classifications are presented in the form of 8-column tables.
The first four columns are generally fixed. The first two show the ISO 6743-99 letter symbol and the general application. The next two columns refer to particular and more specific applications. The fifth column gives special properties, the sixth the ISO L symbol, the seventh a description of applications,...
3.NF ISO 6743 - 8 (T 60 - 505) classification of R products for temporary corrosion protection
A French group was responsible for drawing up this classification, which was finalized in April 1987.
3.1 Type of products R
Products covered by the classification can be used to protect both bare and coated metals, i.e. to protect against all types of surface deterioration caused by environmental conditions....
4.Product specification R
There are currently no international specifications for protective products. Some users have drawn up specifications for their particular applications, often using in-house, non-standardized test methods. These users are either manufacturers or organizations, most often military (US Army: MIL), French Ministry of the Armed Forces (AIR), Direction centrale du service des Essences des Armées (DCEA).
...5.Conclusion
International standardization of industrial lubricants has always lagged far behind that of lubricants for gasoline and diesel engines and automotive transmissions. This gap is now closing, thanks to the tenacity of a number of expert groups.
ISO 6743 - 8 classification and ISO/TS 12928 documents exist thanks to a group of French experts who have been working since 1979.
