1. Main parameters involved in atmospheric corrosion of metals and alloys

1.1 Composition of the atmosphere

Corrosion in the purely gaseous phase (also known as "dry corrosion") only occurs at relatively high temperatures (> 100°C), never encountered in the ambient atmosphere. Only electrochemical corrosion, the most frequent case, in the presence of humidity will be described (for dry corrosion, see [M 4 220] in Techniques de l'Ingénieur).
