10. Conclusion and outlook
This study has highlighted the main alteration mechanisms of silico-potassium-lime stained glass in contact with the atmospheric environment (multiphase and subject to strong variations). In addition to the interdiffusion process, which leads to the formation of a layer of dealkalized, hydrated and highly cracked glass, local hydrolysis/precipitation reactions lead to morpho-structural reorganization of the glass (formation of laminae and laminations). In addition, the cations extracted from the glass interact with atmospheric pollutants to form secondary crystalline phases, both on the surface and in the network of cracks. These weathering phenomena mainly occur in contact with rainfall, but gaseous pollutants and relative humidity are also factors to be taken into account, particularly with a view to a preventive conservation plan.
