Claude BATAILLE: Former department manager at Ascométal's Fos-sur-Mer plant
INTRODUCTION
Over the past thirty years, the development of continuous casting has revolutionized plant design and the conditions under which intermediate products are manufactured for finishing trains. However, the ingot track must be maintained in some plants, and pit furnaces are still the most widely used before blooming.
After reheating, blooms and billets from the blooming or continuous casting processes are fed into medium-bar or wire mills to produce finished products.
This article describes the various stages in the manufacture of semi-finished and finished products, as well as the equipment used and its performance. The techniques used for quality control of manufactured products are also presented.
