battitures ; scale

Metallic particles of iron oxide that detach from the metal during hot working (rolling, forging, stamping).

ferrous byproducts; coproduits ferreux

Material, intentional and unavoidable, created during the same manufacturing process, and at the same time as the main product. Both the main finished product and the co-product must meet specifications of characteristics, and each is suitable for direct use for a particular purpose.

(Examples of ferrous co-products: slag, blast furnace slag, steel mill slag, turnings, etc.).

Vertical furnace for smelting metals by burning coke. There are also gas-fired cupola furnaces known as "coke less cupola".
