3. Iron cycle

This formulation, which dates back to a research project launched by USINOR and the CNRS in 1995, is perfectly in line with the dynamics of what is now known as the circular economy. It shows, if proof were needed, just how far steel has come in this field.

The aim was to accelerate collective thinking on sustainable recycling, particularly that of steel, by pooling private and public research resources around a theme with strong economic, environmental, scientific and technical resonance.

The project was divided into five lines of investigation, which enabled us to take a systematic, analytical approach to the subject as a whole. We will use them as the main threads for the rest of this presentation (figure 16 ):
