3.1 Surface preparation

The fact that nitriding is carried out at low temperatures means that the effects of burning off surface contaminants and "recrystallization by annealing" of the material (which occur with high-temperature treatments) are not, or only to a limited extent, involved. In these conditions, surface preparation prior to treatment is a decisive factor in the quality of the nitrides obtained.
