
7. Properties of nitrided parts
Nitriding or nitrocarburizing treatments provide, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the process and the materials treated, the following characteristics:
high surface hardness ;
chemical modification by growth of a combination layer ;
compressive prestressing of the surface.
The resulting properties are mainly :
increased fatigue strength, especially in the presence of notch effects and stress concentrations;
improved resistance to seizure, adhesive bonding and wear caused by small movements, mainly thanks to the properties of the combination layer;
increased resistance to abrasion due to the effect of increased hardness ;
