7. Properties of nitrided parts

Nitriding or nitrocarburizing treatments provide, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the process and the materials treated, the following characteristics:

  • high surface hardness ;

  • chemical modification by growth of a combination layer ;

  • compressive prestressing of the surface.

The resulting properties are mainly :

  • increased fatigue strength, especially in the presence of notch effects and stress concentrations;

  • improved resistance to seizure, adhesive bonding and wear caused by small movements, mainly thanks to the properties of the combination layer;

  • increased resistance to abrasion due to the effect of increased hardness ;
