3. Comparison of different techniques

When we compare the various mechanical surface treatment techniques used in industry or under development, we can draw the following conclusions.

Shot peening, roller peening, hammer peening, laser shock peening and ultrasonic shot peening are the five most widely used and interesting surface treatments for improving material performance. Compressive residual stresses are essential to compensate for the mechanical stresses induced by the operation of mechanical systems.
