2. Crucible induction furnaces

2.1 General

Crucible induction furnaces have been used to melt ferrous metals since the early 20th century, but it wasn't until 1920 that this type of furnace enjoyed a major industrial boom, thanks to the development of reliable, economical static condensers. Since then, induction furnaces have gone from strength to strength, and now account for 26% of French cast steel production. These furnaces are defined by the frequency of the electric current used (50 to 10,000 Hz), the installed power (up to 1.2 MW/t) and their capacity, which can exceed 100 t liquid. As far as French steel foundries are concerned, the furnaces currently installed are of a more modest size, with capacities ranging from a few kilograms to around fifteen tonnes, while their specific power varies widely.
