The part begins to cool in the mold, which constitutes a kind of heat treatment, and this is removed as soon as possible, especially in mass production, to avoid heating the molding sand unnecessarily. The situation is different for large, massive parts, weighing tens of tons for example, where it can take up to several days before the part can be released.
In mechanized sand molding, the sand and parts are separated from the frames by ripping over a vibrating grate. The burnt sand is recovered and returned to the sand mill for regeneration, and the frames, after cleaning, are returned to the molding machines. The parts may remain on the vibrating grate for some time, to be cleaned as far as possible of the molding sand adhering to the surface, and to remove any burnt cores remaining in the hollow parts.
