ABSTRACT

Amongst the formulae and data models used to calculate the mechanical properties of general purpose steel, purely phenomenological data models, micrometric or nanometric models based on metal physics are distinguished. These call upon dislocation dynamics or Monte Carlo methods. This article summarises the numerical values of the conventional data models based on the effect of grain size (Hall-Petch effect) and other hardening parameters. They can calculate the yield and resistance of ferritic steels and ferrite perlite. Several formulae are given for interstitial-free steels, ferrite-bainite and ferrite-martensite mixes (dual phase). Considering the advantages of these data models in improving manufacturing regularity, they are used in real time. To this effect grain-size prediction, phase changes and potential precipitation modules are established.

 INTRODUCTION

As more and more is known about the metallurgical characteristics on which steel properties depend, a wealth of numerical data has become available, theoretically allowing us to quantify the role of many factors, both analytical and manufacturing-related.

The diversity of products and the entanglement of metallurgical transformations during manufacture make it impossible to establish formulas for calculating general properties that can be applied in the greatest number of cases.

The aim of the following presentation is to identify a few rules for constructing formulas or models that go beyond the statistical processing of industrial batches with limited variations in characteristics, or the analysis of laboratory experiments, which are always restricted to a part of the phenomena.
