4. Applications

In 2006, Ashby and Greer wrote that metallic glasses are "homeless" materials, to illustrate the fundamental nature of this type of alloy. Metallic glasses are indeed the fruit of scientific research, in contrast to materials developed to meet a specific need or market.

Amorphous and solid metallic glasses are nevertheless the focus of intense research, as their very different physico-chemical characteristics from crystalline alloys have, from the very beginning of their history, heralded new applications, as well as considerable improvements in specific applications, if their behavior were fully adapted. Amorphous alloys can be credited with exceptional mechanical strength and (soft) magnetic properties, and above all with their potential to combine exceptional properties unmatched by their crystalline counterparts.
