4. Main fields of application
The development of industrial applications requires an economic analysis which must take into account the cost of the technology. Ultra-short technologies can suffer from a relatively high entry ticket, especially if a high-energy laser source is required (of the order of several hundred ke). It has to be introduced in fields where it provides a solution that is unattainable with any other technology. It is therefore a disruptive technology destined to develop new markets.
An example of a femtosecond laser production machine used in the mechanical engineering field is shown in figure 21 .
