INTRODUCTION
A perfect optical instrument transforms a plane or spherical incident wave surface into a wave surface that is usually spherical. Aberrations or defects in the component surfaces alter the shape of the emerging wave: the wave oscillates on either side of a mean sphere. Shape deviations must be within the tolerances defined by the computer. The means of controlling optical surface defects are presented here.
