4. Application examples

The other articles in this volume give many examples of the use of optics in measurements, and hence of radiation detectors: in what follows, we'll consider just a few examples, chosen to show the main methods and cases mentioned above, with the emphasis on the quantitative evaluation of signals, noise, and therefore accessible performance.

Some calculations have been simplified, but the simplifications made do not introduce any really significant error in the results.
