3. Optical switching
Optical switching relies on the ability to independently vary the refractive indices of the different parts making up the switch. The main physical phenomena that can modulate the refractive index of a material are presented in the following paragraphs in terms of the interactions between light and electric fields, acoustic waves and heat via the propagation medium, and their characteristics are summarized in table 2 .
