6. Alternative detection technologies
There are numerous technologies on the market or under development in industry and laboratories, which can be classified into four different groups. They are all based on the photoelectric effect: either the external photoelectric effect using photocathodes in the first two groups, or the internal photoelectric effect based on a semiconductor: silicon for the third group, or lower-gap semiconductors for the fourth group, in order to be sensitive in band 1.
6.1 Image intensifier tubes
This technology is the first group of low-light level imagers. Image intensifiers are also known as light intensifiers (LI) or brightness enhancers. It is the subject of chapters in the references
