6. Glossary

frequency drift pulse amplification; Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA)

Laser pulse amplification technique enabling extremely high laser intensities to be achieved by temporally stretching, amplifying and then compressing the pulses.

Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplification (OPCPA)

A special case of frequency-drift pulse amplification, in which time-stretched pulses are amplified by mixing nonlinear waves with an intense pump laser beam.

mode-locked laser

Laser using a device that modulates its cavity losses (active modulator or saturable absorber) so as to emit a periodic train of short pulses.

frequency drift; chirp

Time dependence of the instantaneous frequency of an optical pulse.
