Fluoride glasses were discovered accidentally in 1975 by M. Poulain at the University of Rennes, while working on crystallized compounds based on ZrF 4 . This type of glass could not be predicted by any of the criteria commonly used for oxide glasses (Goldschmidt, Sun, Rawson...).
