Metamaterials are not a recent creation, especially optical metamaterials. Craftsmen have always sought to improve the materials they work with (see History box).
Among the most famous examples are the alloys used in metallurgy and the stained-glass windows of cathedrals. In optics, metamaterials have been around for thousands of years. In electromagnetism, on the other hand, they are much more recent. However, they did make their appearance very early on, since the patent for a metal reflector made up of a periodic grid of wires filed by Marconi and Franklin in 1919 is an example of a metamaterial .
