4.1 Facade typologies

There are many typological characteristics that influence the daylighting potential of a building.

These include

  • the proportion of glazing: solid facades punctuated by openings / fully glazed curtain walls;

  • the shape of openings: horizontal/vertical glazed bands;

  • facade composition: single / double glazed envelopes / openwork screens.

The typologies mentioned above have often developed in relation to the technologies available, but also as a function of more subjective architectural movements or trends.
