3. Benefits of pKa determination
The interest of pK a determination is manifold. We note three major interests in carrying it out, namely being able to:
quantify the strength of an acid-base couple and thus be able to predict the direction and final degree of progress of an acid-base reaction;
calculate the proportion of acid and conjugate base, knowing the pH of the solution in which the acid or base is dissolved;
quantitatively classify the substituents on which acid and base functions are grafted in terms of the electronic effects they exert.
