Overview
ABSTRACT
Lead-based pigments demonstrate a specific instability leading to the blackening of the pictorial layer. This alteration phenomenon is extremely detrimental to the aesthetics and readability of the work of art and there exists no restoration technique allowing for the restoration of the original appearance of the painting. The thermal properties of lead compounds allow for conceiving a method of treatment based on the irradiation of the blackened layer by a continuous laser beam. A series of experimental tests has allowed for optimizing the operational parameters and validating the process under the real conditions of a restoration workshop.
