Jean-Claude LAOUT: Doctorate in Chemistry (3rd cycle) - Former head of the "Paints" department at Wolff Laboratories (Lyon)
INTRODUCTION
The aim of this dossier is to present the polymers most commonly used in the paint and varnish industry, and their related properties. The selection of manufactured products is essentially based on the atmospheres in which the painted object is exposed. These are classified according to the aggressiveness of the environment: a rural atmosphere with little chemical aggression, an industrial atmosphere, a marine atmosphere whose main pollutants are chloride compounds, and a marine-industrial atmosphere which combines pollutants from the marine environment with those from the chemical industry, such as nitrate and sulfate compounds...
Paints, in liquid or powder form, can be used to protect and/or decorate a wide variety of surfaces: metals (steel, galvanized steel, aluminum alloys, etc.), wood, glass and plastics. However, for maximum effectiveness, it's essential to combine their application with state-of-the-art surface preparation. This must take into account :
substrate temperature, ambient humidity ;
the atmosphere in which the object to be painted is located;
materials and application conditions.
After a presentation of film-forming coatings, paint film formation will be examined in terms of its structure, i.e. in terms of the main functional groups involved in the chemical structure of the coating.
A section will be devoted to the main properties of film-forming coatings and their characterization. A few essential notions on regulations will be explained in .
Readers are referred to the for the study of the physico-chemistry of compounds and the main pulverulent materials used.

Paints for food contact
All items likely to come into contact with foodstuffs must meet inertness requirements so as not to impart any taste to the food or allow any of their constituents to migrate.
The regulations take up these requirements by setting out the list of substances authorized...
