1.1 Definition of a gel and criteria for obtaining an aerogel

A gel is a thermodynamically stable solid-liquid two-phase system consisting of a continuous three-dimensional interpenetrating double network, one solid and one liquid. Flory has proposed a classification of gels that applies equally to organic and inorganic gels:
