Although the subject of this article is macromolecular synthesis by chain polymerization, it is first necessary to define a number of macromolecular chemistry and physical chemistry terms. The IUPAC definitions, translated into French by the Commission d'Enseignement du Groupe Français des Polymères , are retained in this article, even if industrial usage often uses different terms specific to each polymer application field, inherited from older nomenclatures.
