9. Toxicity

The impact of boron and its compounds on the environment comes mainly from borate processing waste and the use of detergents and bleaching agents, as a result of the migration of soluble boron species into soils and the aquatic environment. The World Health Organization recommends a boron content of 0.3 mg/L for drinking water, but in the European Union, the limit is 1 mg/L .

Animal studies have shown that boron in the form of boric acid and borate has toxic effects on development and reproduction at concentrations 100 to 1,000 times higher than those found in the environment....
