The creation of a liquid-liquid emulsion in a mechanically agitated tank is facilitated by the use of a radial-type agitator, which induces high shear within the liquid phase, but also good circulation of the phases within the tank to maintain the emulsion and avoid coalescence of the drops . The most commonly used agitators include radial turbines with or without discs (e.g. the Ruhston turbine), and rotor-stators (coupled to an agitator to create circulation).
