2. Android and iPhone OS: opposing forces
Today, Android and iPhone OS (iOS) account for barely half the market for operating systems on advanced mobile devices, or "smartphones".
Introduced in 2008, Android is the fastest-growing operating system, with a market share of around 30% in 2010 and over 50% in 2011 (Source Mac Afee and Gartner). Meanwhile, iOS stagnated, due in part to the sales depreciation effect of waiting for the release of the new iPhone 4S, which was delayed in 2011.
It should be noted, however, that this market breakdown varies considerably from one continent to another.
Overall, smartphones are in the minority on the global cell phone market.
On the other hand, some regions have a very high penetration rate, characteristic of a mature market.
