Starting with DAS systems (Direct Attached Storage, passive peripherals), architects have successively designed intelligent systems (data sharing via a controller), a dedicated file service (NAS appliance for Network Attached Storage ), then networking (functional richness of the SAN, Storage Area Network ), before today proposing virtualization (i.e. a logical vision of storage).
