This section presents many of the theoretical aspects of an LDAP directory (see Box 1 for a brief history of the protocol). In order to present these different concepts, the document will follow a step-by-step progression, from the most general to the most detailed, and even the most complex. Thus, for example, the notion of input will be considered first. Next, the composition of an entry will be studied, and in particular the notion of attribute.
