 INTRODUCTION

Summary

Human beings have profoundly altered their relationship with their habitat throughout history. With the advent of communication technologies, they have become nomadic once again, expecting greater comfort, security, well-being and health services from their living environment. The home becomes a witness to their lives, anticipating their rhythms, habits, tastes and desires. The concept of the "intelligent home for health" is giving rise to numerous projects. Based on available technologies and simple operations, research has identified regularities in activities, correlations between daytime and night-time activities, and information on periods of inactivity. Automatic identification of daily activities will soon make it possible to assess the level of autonomy of frail subjects.

Abstract

Humans deeply modified their relationship to their housings during the past centuries. With communication technologies, humans are nomads again but still await for more services from their living place as comfort, security, wellness and also health services. This living place becomes witness of our lives, rhythms of activities, habits, tastes and wishes. The "Health Smart Home" concept initiated numerous research projects. With basic sensors and algorithms, researchers discovered regular patterns in activities, relationships between night and day activity levels, information from periods of inactivity. The automatic recognition of the daily activities will further help detect loss of autonomy in fragile people.
