The choice of a license is of the utmost importance. It is the legal materialization of the author's will.
If the author wishes to share the fruits of his labor with as many people as possible, and to promote this sharing in a global way by encouraging everyone to participate, he will opt for a GPL-type free license.
If the author wishes to give the user the choice between sharing or appropriating the code for integration into proprietary software, he will opt for a dual license. This solution combines the strategic advantages of proprietary licensing with those of open source.
